Orgullo kan Bikol, or pride of Bikol, an annual trade fair that showcases the best products of Bikol for the whole world to see, was held last October 20 to 23, 2005 at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Madrigal Scholars, only in their sophomore year, have successfully exhibited their products together with Bikolano manufacturers who have been in business for many years.

Mark Mon C. Magalona, one of the Madrigal Scholars who joined the trade fair, have these thoughts about his experience –

“Do we really have something to be proud of?”  This was the first question I asked myself when I first heard about Orgullo kan Bikol. I asked the question knowing that Bikol is one of the poorest regions of the country.  But after the trade fair, I answered my question with a resounding YES.

I realized that Bicol Region has a lot of things to be proud of.  I have seen the glamour of the different native products of our region.  I have tasted the sweetness of Bikol delicacies and delicious native foods.  I have seen in some of the local governments’ publications the richness of our land with scenic spots.  I have also seen the beautiful handicrafts and furniture made by fellow Bikolano.  I have known the creativity and industry of a Bikolano. Indeed, Bikol has something, or shall I say, many things to be proud of.

Being an Entrepreneurship student and a Madrigal Scholar studying here at Ateneo de Naga University, I realized that the solution to poverty can be achieved through my hands and my fellow youth’s.  Bikol has so many resources, all we need to do is develop them properly.

Through good business, we will be able to develop and make good use of our available resources.  The exhibitors in the trade fair have proven that business will greatly help in Bikol’s economic development.  With the spirit of the magis within me, I commit myself to the dream of alleviating poverty.
